Only three years ago I was a 50lbs overweight smoker who couldn’t run one city block. It was a few months before my 30th birthday and I didn’t want to live the rest of my life being unhappy while I watch my body size increase and my overall health decrease. I decided I needed to change my life and become healthier, so I signed up to walk a half marathon. I allowed myself seven months to train and I convinced a few athletic friends to try it with me. I am proud to say that I finished my first half marathon in 2009 and I have felt like the sky is the limit ever since!

Crossing that finish line inspired me to live my life to the fullest! I pushed myself further than I ever thought possible and it paid off. In 2010 I challenged myself again and finished the Detroit full marathon. All of it was possible, just because I believed in myself. I made a commitment to my decision, I vocalized it to everyone who mattered and I put in the necessary work to achieve it. The only real thing that made it possible was the fact that I had the right attitude. And if I can do it, then trust me, anyone can do it!

The second thing you need is a personal desire to improve your health and your life. It is about YOU! You can’t do it to please someone else! The journey begins when you realize that you are worth the effort and that you are making these changes because you want to be happier and healthier for the rest of your life. Your health and your overall well-being are the focal point to your weight loss journey.

It is essential that you assess the people who are around you, especially in the beginning when it is so easy to revert back to your old ways. We all have positive and negative influences in our life and it is important to understand the kind of support you will receive from the people closest to you.
